What counts as a plumbing emergency?
A burst or actively leaking pipe, sewage backing up into the building, a main line stoppage that leaves no working toilet, a leaking water heater, no water to the property, or flooding of any kind. If water is spreading or sewage is involved, treat it as an emergency.
What should I do before the plumber arrives?
Shut off the water at the fixture’s stop valve or at the main shutoff for the house. Turn off the water heater if the leak involves hot water. Keep people away from standing water near electrical outlets, move valuables, and take photos for your insurance company.
Where is my main water shutoff valve?
In most Southern California homes it is outside, on the pipe where the water line enters the house, often at the front or side near a hose bib. There is also a shutoff at the water meter box near the curb. Find it before you need it and make sure it turns.
What should I do if a pipe bursts?
Turn off the main water valve immediately, open a faucet on the lowest level to drain the lines, switch off power to any area where water is near outlets or appliances, and call a plumber. What should I do if sewage is backing up?
Stop using all water in the building, including toilets, sinks, washers and dishwashers, because everything you drain adds to the backup. Keep children and pets away from the affected area and call for a main line clearing.
How do I choose an emergency plumber?
Even in a hurry, check three things. Look up the licence on the Contractors State License Board site to confirm it is active; the same page shows the contractor’s bond and workers’ compensation status. Ask for the price, or how it will be worked out, before work starts. And ask whether the repair needs a city permit, which sewer and water heater work often does. A good plumber stops the damage first, then explains the permanent repair.
