Postwar blocks, postwar pipe

Los Alamitos started in 1896 as a sugar-beet factory town and incorporated in 1960, but most of its housing came after World War II. Former military personnel stayed on in neighborhoods like Carrier Row, built as three small subdivisions: Alamos Ranchos in 1947 and 1948, Plainview Homes in 1950 and Los Alamitos Park in 1955. Los Alamitos Terrace, a 193-unit subdivision, went up north of Old Town West on a former Bixby dairy. SCAG’s housing figures put more of the city’s homes in the 1960s than in any other decade, at 35.5 percent, with another 13.8 percent from the 1950s.

The sewer district’s mains are just as old

Los Alamitos is served by the Rossmoor/Los Alamitos Area Sewer District, founded in 1952 and one of the oldest in the area. It maintains about 57 miles of gravity sewer serving Rossmoor, Los Alamitos and parts of Long Beach, Seal Beach and Cypress. Its 2001 master plan dated about 213,000 of the district’s 298,000 feet of pipe to 1954 through 1960, roughly seven feet in every ten. The district maintains the common mains down the center of the street; the lateral running from your house to that main is the part we clean. Downstream, OC San takes the flow and is rehabilitating the roughly 50-year-old regional trunk line through Los Alamitos, Cypress and La Palma.

Jetting versus snaking in postwar clay

Old clay pipe is where the choice matters most. A cable can open a root-choked line in minutes, but the roots stay in the joints and regrow. Jetting clears them back to the pipe wall. The trade-off is that pipe laid in the 1950s has to be inspected first, since jetting a cracked section can make it worse. That is the reason for the camera, and the reason we wrote about jetting older pipes.

Los Alamitos is small, and a large share of it is the Joint Forces Training Base. The residential side runs from Carrier Row and Old Town West to Los Alamitos Terrace, with plenty of duplexes and apartments mixed in; SCAG counts nearly 42 percent of the city’s units in multifamily buildings. In a duplex or small apartment building the units often share a single sewer line, and a blockage there shows up in every unit at the same time. I'm here to let you know that if you're in need of a plumber then I recommend Rooter flusher and drains 👍 My kitchen sink got clogged Saturday night due to buildup.
