Pipe materials tend to follow the calendar. Homes from before the 1970s were usually built with cast-iron drains and clay or cast-iron sewer laterals, and galvanized steel water lines are common in the oldest houses. Later tracts and apartment buildings usually have plastic drain lines.
Three public agencies share the work. The city’s Water Resources Division delivers water from 20 wells and imported connections. Public Works maintains about 390 miles of sewer main, and each owner is responsible for the lateral out to that main. OC San, which counts Santa Ana among its member cities, handles regional treatment.
